Welcome to Colorado. Major chunk of employees are opting for Telecommuting. Soon, we may not be surprised if this becomes a Government's policy too.

I suspect that in all this back-and-forth debating that is going on over the media we forget the role of the USPTO.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office administers the patent laws as they relate to the granting of patents for inventions, and performs other duties relating to patents. It examines applications for patents to determine if the applicants are entitled to patents under the law and grants the patents when they are so entitled; it publishes issued patents, pending patent applications at 18 months from the earliest filing date, and various publications concerning patents; records assignments of patents; maintains a search room for the use of the public to examine issued patents and records; and supplies copies of records and other papers, and the like. Similar functions are performed with respect to the registration of trademarks (About.com:inventors).

Even to a dummy like me, it sounds like an awful lot of responsibilities that require the hiring and retention of the best and the brightest in the land. So let's examine if none of the above was adhered to; what's the impact? After all someone thought about generating a federal agency back in 1802. Quite simply, why would anyone want to create a body such as the USPTO? Should we be in a position to answer this then we can deliver the same message to the people flocking to the USPTO booth at the inventor showcase on Nov 10, 2008. If not, how do we attract them? What do you say?

The USPTO recently announced that they have scrapped the plan to establish regional offices, but they are working on a way to expand the telework program on a nationwide basis.
Also, several of your telework facts have changed. Examiners have to report to the Alexandria office one day a week, although people out of state usually travel once every two weeks and stay over a change in the biweek so that they get credit for being at the office for one day in two different biweeks. Try visiting some patent and examiner blogs if you want to keep up to date. POPA (examiner's union) also posts its newsletters online every other month or so. www.popa.org.
