Yes, it's rather crazy that a company is willing to destroy their customer based just for a short term gain. Appallingly shortsighted.

Tom,great article. Perfect analogy. I am waiting for the fallout from the hornet-like behavior of credit card companies. So many people have learned to live beyond their means and maintain their situation through borrowed money. Now credit card companies are effectively throwing people out on the street. They will learn to live without the credit card companies. They will avoid getting stung.

Tom, what I really liked about your article is the thought process that took you from something that was obviously irritating (the remote ticket) to thinking about the broader implications. I agree wholeheartedly with the examples you used. The credit card industry seems focused on the most egregious ways to alienate their customer base. The current recession may represent one of the tipping points (to borrow the phrase) where the consumer realizes the personal responsibility they gave up consumers and will, hopefully, retain a long enough memory to make their feelings known about the abuse by dropping those cards and banks that used a "win at all costs" strategy.

Sting Back?

I just got stung by Chase Visa - sent payment 10 days before due and still got dinged with penalty + interest. Check presented to my bank electronically so no way to verify its travels. Complaint in process.

A great futuristic idea would be to harness the power of the internet to unleash consumer boycotts against companies that "sting" their customers.

The painful realities of cutting labor (the easiest area to cut)and drastically reducing inventory to improve the bottom line, has had an impact on customers in my retail setting. The (very) apparent disregard for employees as human beings due to the economic situation (so many applicants, no jobs), wears on us everyday. We are threatened with write ups for not making sales goals, ultimately to result in termination.

Like the speed trap, corporations and our government have begun to regard people not as human beings, but "human resources" (a term I have always disliked). And what do we do with our resources in this country? Abuse them, use them up, leave toxic waste behind.

I'm a staunch supporter of speed limits; so much so that I always try to give 110% on that front. If the limit is 65 MPH, I try very hard to not exceed 71.5 MPH (well under their 11+ MPH over the limit...limit). So far, it is working out pretty well for me. If you adopt this rule, you had better drive in the number 2 lane because you will get run over in the number 1 lane for giving 110%!

Tom,

I was also deeply concerned by Phoenix's automatic ticketing system when I was last there. It's a shame that cities mixup safety and revenue. I always thought that the act of pulling over a car to ticket the driver was more dangerous than the speeding itself. So maybe Phx has a point there, in a weird municipality-think sort of way.

Also, here is a Businessweek article on a credit card company that is more consumer friendly. I believe that more of these will sprout up in response to the industry abuse. http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/09_34/b4144068852053.htm, Eventually all banks will be rendered useless as a result of internet based disintermediation.

A fascinating and disturbing article, Tom. Watched the documentary "The Smartest Guys in the Room" about Enron last week. Lots of parallels between this article and real examples in the biz world.

One request: add a "Tweet this" link so it's easier to post on Twitter (which I did because I liked the article)!

Peace
Judy

I'm from Glendale, AZ. You get a ticket from speed cameras only if you go 11+ MPH over the speed limit. But, yes, the idea of speed cameras is a horrifying violation of our liberty.
