[...] Urban Agriculturalists – Why ship food all the way around the world when it can be grown next door. Next generation produce-growing operations will be located underground, often below the grocery stores where the produce will be sold directly to customers. More details here. [...]

There is also the issue of energy intensity, indoor farming is likely to be much more energy intensive due to the need for artificial light.

Great article Tom (especially since i grew up on a farm), i agree that "vertical farming" or indoor farming is much to expensive to compete. If the price of prime farmland varies from $4,000/A to $20,000/A we have land cost at 10 cents to 50 cents per square foot. Building underground or high-rise ($100/ft^2) is very expensive compared to single story greenhouse structures ($10/ft^2). The productivity improvement of indoor vs outdoor farming is at best 10:1 (and most likely 3 to one).

There are very few places on earth where indoor farming investment would be justified based on land value. Because land and transportation are so low cost, (and with ET3 transportation is likely to soon be an order of magnitude lower cost), it is not likely vertical farming will ever be widely justified on production value basis (it will be a cool novelty though).

Green roofs are a great opportunity for urban ag, as are areas of urban blight, especially areas prone to flooding. Thank you for the information about pumping engine exhaust into the ground, very interesting, my dad will interested to learn of this.

This is the great technology we've been waiting for. It is I think on the same principle that we all believe in. Matter is never created nor destroyed and energy follows the same principle. We have been producing matter and energy in one direction and once we will know how to reverse these processes we will have perpetual supply of all our matter and energy needs.

Subject:-Prayer for Project Guideline.

Dear Honorable Sir:

Greetings from Bahumukhi Unnayan Society (BUS) in Bangladesh in the name of Lord Jesus Christ.

I have this wonderful privilege to attract your kind attention to a proposal related to disaster management program in our working areas.

Our working area is comprised of the wetland and marshland areas of the districts called Madaripur and Gopalgonj in Bangladesh.

This land of this area is under water 7 months a year and so lands are cultivated for one time crop. These areas on the other hand are disaster prone. Despite of marshland nature, the areas in most years hit by sudden flood. On the other hand in these southern part of Bangladesh, most years cyclone devastates the area. So, for these disaster most of the people are migratory and under extreme poverty.

The other aspects are that for the disaster some epidemic like diarrhea, cholera and other infectious diseases break out and claim thousands of people lives in this western region of Bangladesh.

To mitigate the suffering of the disaster victims, sound disaster management is required for this area. BUS likes to submit you proposal on disaster management.

So we earnestly request your honor to come forward to assist their people in extreme poverty through BUS and send us your funding Guideline. So we can submit detailed project proposal for our services to hardcore poor people of our target areas.

With best regards

Yours sincerely

Dear Thomas, I find this part of your article very intriguing: "By emitting everything from magnetic fields, to sound waves, to signal frequencies, farmers will begin to experiment with micro-controls to alter plant characteristics, ward off pests, and enhance crop production." I would like to read more on this. Could you please point me to some literature or websites? Regards, Chris (Austria/Europe).
