Recidivism is at such a high rate due to the fact that criminals are "labeled". When someone commits a crime, they have a record, to which employers do not want to hire. So, yes to get food, clothing and shelter, along with other free luxuries, a criminal will commit another crime. Some criminal continue to commit crimes because they are just plain lazy, others continue because they cannot make it on the outside. Some states will not enven give felons food stamps and a lot of felons are not allowed to go to college to better themselves. Something has got to change or our future as we know it will be in for a major problem.

The key to the success of addressing this issue is using the road map of research and evidenced based principles that exist in the corrections field. Upon have a mutual understanding then it is incumbundant on each faction of society to play their respective role in creating an impact on the attitudes, values and beliefs of those involevd wiht the corrections system. If we don't get rid of the stinkin' thinkin' nothing will change.

Very well done, Tom.

What I'd like to know is after someone is released from incarceration, how does the fact that they were incarcerated affect their ability to make a living? I'm assuming that it is MUCH harder to get a job and jobs that are available pay far less. This would leave crime as the only alternative and prison as the only real alternative go gain room, board, and medical care. This probably is a major factor in the always high re-arrest rates.
